Continuous Provision

At Cecil Gowing, continuous provision is an important part of how children learn from Nursery through Key Stage 1. It is the carefully planned set of spaces, resources and opportunities available to children each day, both indoors and outdoors. Children might build with blocks, explore the natural world, create in the art area, choose books, write for a purpose or use practical resources to solve a maths problem.

These experiences give children time to return to ideas, practice skills and make connections between subjects. Adults play an active part: they observe children’s learning, introduce vocabulary, model skills, ask questions and adapt the environment to provide the right next challenge. Continuous provision works alongside direct teaching, giving children opportunities to use what they have been taught.

In Nursery and Reception, learning through play and exploration builds foundations in language, early reading and writing, maths, physical development and relationships. In Year 1, we continue this approach with increasingly purposeful challenges linked to the curriculum. Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, work together and become more independent. In Year 2, the approach develops into focused independent learning, helping children take greater responsibility and prepare for the move to junior school.

Since introducing continuous provision in Key Stage 1, we have seen children become more confident and independent in applying their learning. This development has taken place alongside improving school outcomes, including stronger phonics results. Most of all, we value the curiosity, perseverance and enjoyment of learning we see every day. Through continuous provision, children have opportunities to show kindness, resilience and creativity as they learn and grow.
